The Broken Obsession for Happiness

Media -  A bridge to transfer information. Giving humans the beautiful yet intricate ability to share thought and ideas. The world shares more media, faster then it ever has before.

So I want to talk about media and it’s frequent portrayal of happiness.

This thing that we seem unable to get enough of.

This thing that others seem to have more of.

This thing that becomes a distraction, a misstep in direction, drawing us further from what matters.

This focus, or obsession with happiness, is costly.

Especially when we should direct our attention to something better, truly meaningful, and sustainable.

Peace.

Peace within our hearts and minds.

A gift that cannot be rivaled.

Yet it is difficult to find in this chaotic world.

Keep in mind happiness is a fleeting emotion.

Where as peace is something that is lasting, beautiful, and sustainable.

So why isn’t this the focus?

Why isn’t peace the goal?

Well I want to bring you back to media, and I want to emphasize the importance of how difficult it is to portray peace.

Peace looks different to everyone.

And it isn’t very appealing or interesting to put on screen. Because peace is calm void of the intense emotions found on TV, your phone or where ever else you watch, read, and hear your media.

People watch TV, listen to music, watch YouTube to feel something.

To feel Joy, enthusiasm, hope, sadness, drama, a sense of adventure, and so much more.

So peace finds it difficult to find the spotlight. Because we don’t search for it.

Not to mention peace is a concept that very few people understand and have experienced. So it is hard to portray that in media.

Peace isn’t very relatable.

And because of that, we use something that people are familiar with and desire to see, hear, and read the most. Which happens to be happiness, and that becomes a main focal point in storytelling, in media, and in marketing.

So let me try to discribe the indiscribable, peace.

Peace is feeling one with yourself.

Your internal cup full and likely overflowing.

A feeling of joy for the little things life has to offer. Whilst still being able to process times of sadness or frustration.

A baseline level of tranquility and ease within your heart and mind.

Peace is something that is sustainable, and it’s such a beautiful thing when it becomes your baseline and a mode of operation for the way you live your life.

When at peace, any fears and desires tend to be greatly diminished. Of course, we are all human and we do have fears and desires. However, when you are at peace, they’re very minuscule, and you feel enlightened, you feel free.

Another thing I want to mention, of course, is that you cannot buy peace. But luckily in the modern world, privileged with a decent economy it doesn’t cost much monetarily to live a life of peace.

What it does take is time and effort to better understand yourself.

Who you are, what your purpose is, and how to surround yourself with the right people to enjoy the little things that life has to offer.

Which, let me make it clear, is no easy feat, but it is well worth it.

Peace is truly an indescribable feeling that is worth every trial, every tribulation to be able to get to experience such a beautiful thing that we were all meant for. Again, the difference is that peace is sustainable, and that is what sets it apart from anything else that the world can offer.
